2. Road Tests

A. Question: My (G2/G) or (M2/M) road test was canceled. Will I receive priority testing due to the cancellation of my road test appointment?
Answer: Due to the high demand for the in-vehicle passenger (G2/G) and motorcycle (M2/M) road test appointments, we are unable to prioritize customers with canceled appointments at any of our DriveTest Centres. As additional Driver Examiners are hired in the months ahead, DriveTest will add more road test appointments to help address the current backlog.

B. Question: If my G2/G test was canceled due to the suspension of services, will I lose my road test fee?
Answer: No, all in-vehicle passenger road tests (G2/G) and motorcycle road tests (M2/M) will be canceled without penalty. The pre-paid road test fee will remain on file for future appointments.

C. Question: I will be visiting a DriveTest Centre to complete a road test. Is there a new process in place that I should be aware of?
Answer: Customers will be required to complete a COVID-19 self-screening assessment prior to entering the DriveTest Centre. Applicants who answer yes to any of the questions in the screening tool will not be able to enter the building or complete their road test.

If the above requirements are not met, then the road test appointment will be canceled without penalty.

It is recommended that all in-vehicle road test applicants wear a face mask or covering at all times.

D. Question: When will additional road test appointments be available on the system for booking?
Answer: As new Driver Examiners are hired and trained, new blocks of road tests will be added to the booking system and appointment availability will increase. To book an appointment please visit https://drivetest-sit.serco-des.ca/dtbookingngapp/

E. Question: Are stand-by appointments offered at this time?
Answer: Yes, as of March 21, 2022 stand-by appointments will be available at centres that are able to offer them.

F. Question: What changes have been made to the G road test?
Answer: To help clear the backlog of in-vehicle passenger road tests resulting from COVID-19 restrictions and closures, the G road test has been temporarily modified.

Until further notice, the G road test will not include these elements that are already covered in the G2 road test:

  • parallel parking
  • roadside stops
  • 3-point turn
  • driving in residential neighbourhoods

The test will still include all of the fundamental elements such as:

  • driving on major roads and expressways including merging on and off, maintaining appropriate speed and space, signalling and more
  • turns, curves and lane changes
  • intersections
  • driving in business areas

Learn more about what’s included in the G road test.

3. Expired Driver’s Licences

A. Question: My novice class (G1, G2, M1, M2, LM2, M2) driver’s licence expired on or after March 1, 2020. Am I able to schedule a road test appointment without re-applying for a driver’s licence and completing a vision and a knowledge test?
Answer: Yes, if your novice class licences expired between March 1, 2020 and December 31, 2022 you are able to schedule a road test appointment without re-applying for a driver’s licence and completing a vision and a knowledge test until December 31, 2022. Novice class licences expired between March 1, 2020 and December 31, 2022 are extended to December 31, 2022 to complete the required testing to maintain their licence or graduate to the next level of licensing.

B. Question: How many times may I attempt a road test while my licence is expired and extended under the temporary regulations?
Answer: Extended novice licence holders may attempt their road test as many times as necessary until December 31, 2022. As per current rules, if a road test for the lower class of licence is attempted to maintain the same class of licence and is not successful, the licence will be downgraded, for example, if a G2 holder attempts the G1 exit (G2) road test and is not successful, the licence will be downgraded to G1. If a G2 holder attempts the G2 exit (G) road test and is not successful, they maintain the G2 licence and additional appointments may be booked until the temporary regulations are revoked.
